I draw what I see. Still life to cityscapes, I enjoy the process of making sense of what I see and then getting that on the page. I like to work with pen and watercolor, but I also paint with acrylic and gouache. I prefer to sketch on site, and outdoors if possible. I live in the incredibly beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, North Carolina with my husband, three children, labradoodle, and lap cat. I can often be found outside with a small sketchbook and pen in hand if I’m not biking or jogging, or chasing my youngest, who happens to be an amazingly fast runner for a five year old.
Originally from north Florida, I’ve grown to love the mountains as much as I love the ocean. Eighteen years in Western North Carolina, and I still don’t sound like I’m from around here, a visitor from Virginia told me. Accent or not, North Carolina is home, and I am continually encouraged and inspired by the kindness and support of my family and friends, and also by the random people I happen to meet.
I am currently working on a series of pen and watercolor paintings of my favorite places in Asheville, as well as challenging myself to complete (and share) a new drawing everyday in 2018. I have been posting my drawings on my instagram account (@jenniferrussavl). I have yet to miss a day, so follow along to see my progress!
Occasionally I will paint house portraits, which have also been posted on my Instagram account. This past year I have completed five commissioned pen and watercolor paintings of some of our beautiful Asheville homes.
